LA will retrofit 140,000 of its residential street lights with  LEDs over a five-year period starting in July. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 40,500 tons and save $10 million annually. This is like taking 6,000 cars off the road. If every major city followed LA's lead, we could eliminate 2 1/2 coal-fired power plants.

DOE RELEASES DATA ON 4 LED STREET LIGHTS IN SAN FRANCISCO, energy reductions ranging from 50% to 70% over the current HPS system. The products that generally performed better in terms of lighting performance also proved to be more economically attractive. The 2 best new construction paybacks were 3.7 & 6.3 years. For retrofits the payback range for these two fixtures was from 7.4 & 10.8 years. Your numbers will differ based on energy & maintenance costs, etc.

Working closely with DOE and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, this working group has developed detailed product performance specifications and evaluation procedures based on group members' needs. The specification has been rigorously vetted by retailers, commercial building owners, suppliers, and manufacturers, and the final LED Site Lighting Performance Specification is now available for download.

The HPS power factor did not qualify for the newly published Energy Star criteria. All of the SSL (LED) luminaires qualified.

Anticipated benefits of the new LED street lights include a reduction of greenhouse gas by approximately 193 tonnes annually, and an annual savings when complete of $26,000. They have replaced 278 lights, 1/3 of those in the city.

By Kat Kerlin. Sparks, NV test runs LED street lights to save energy and money -- replacing 250-watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs with 72-watt LED bulbs. The claim that LEDs won't be competitive with HPS until 2015 by NV Energy (the company that won't sell as much electricity when these go in) in this article is just wrong. Some luminaires are competitive now.
